Coating Thickness and Coverage

All Wilckens Yacht-Line products can be applied either with brush or roller or even airless spraying. Application with brush or roller requires more coatings in order to achieve required film thickness. Where thinner is used more surface is covered but with lesser film thickness. Due to the variety of different types of yachts and boats there is no generally applicable formula for the calculation of the surface area below the water line. The following formulas however can provide a rough indication.

Calculating Painting Surface

Surface area below the water line:

  • Type 1

      Length of Water Line x (Beam + Draught) x 0.75 C.F

  • Type 2

      Length of water line x (Beam + Draught) x 0.5 C.F

  • Type 3

      Length of Water Line x ( Beam + Draught)

Surface area above the water line:

   (Overall length x Beam) x 2 x Freeboard

For Decks:

   0.75 x (Overall length x Beam) –  Area of cabin, cockpit, etc

For masts and spars:

   Diameter x 3.14 x Length

LWL = Length of Water Line                         F = Freeboard (distance from w.l to deck)

  B        = Beam, Breadth                              C.F = Coefficient Factor

  D        = Draught                                      L.O.A = Length Overall
